Gold Etchants (Nitric/HCl)
Gold is oxidised by reaction with Nitric Acid to form Gold Oxide (Au2O3). The oxide subsequently reacts with Hydrochloric Acid to form the soluble Gold Chloride (AuCl3) which dissolves into solution. These mixtures of Nitric and Hydrochloric Acids, also known as Aqua Regia, will also attack platinum.
