Chromium Etchants
Chromium is oxidised by Ce4+ to the Cr3+ ion which then forms a series of water soluble Chromium complexes, the most prevalent being Chromium Nitrate (Cr(NO3)3). The acid provides an acidic environment to catalyse this reaction and also promotes the formation of complexes such as Chromium Nitrate, Perchlorate or Acetate, depending on the acid used.
