DRC Social Responsibility Program
Letter of Welcome
Thank you for your interest in GTL’s Big Hill project and our commitment to social responsibility in Lubumbashi in the Katanga province of the DRC. We are proud of the value that the joint venture has created for the people of Lubumbashi, the DRC and our local partner, Gécamines. The initial $125 million spent on the Big Hill project was the first significant Western investment in the DRC’s resource sector after the deterioration of the DRC economy during the Mobutu regime.
Our modern facility is built to western standards with Finnish technology to protect worker safety, the environment and the surrounding community. We employ 400 skilled, dedicated local people, which has a significant positive impact on their families’ standard of living and overall quality of life in the region. Since operations began in 2000, we have generated more than $600 million (U.S. dollars) for the local economy in the form of payments for raw materials, taxes, electricity, local suppliers and dividends.
We also provide financial support for, and actively participate in, a wide variety of social responsibility activities, particularly focused in three critical areas:
- Improving the lives of our employees and their families
- Improving the lives of the people living in our community
- Supporting children’s education
We invite you to continue reading to learn more about these activities by clicking on the links above or by downloading our DRC Social Responsibility Program brochure (in English and French). For more information, contact CongoInfo@omgi.com.
