OMG’s catalysts for resins and composites include Accelerators, Controllers and Enhancers (ACE) used in conjunction with initiators such as organic peroxide catalysts to accelerate the curing of polyester resins.

Accelerators

Catalyst 510® and Other Cobalt Catalyst Promoters
Catalyst 510® has been designed specifically for use as a polyester catalyst accelerator, and is recommended as the number one choice. However, the wide use of Cobalt Ten-Cem®, Cobalt Hex-Cem®, Cobalt Cem-All® and Cobalt Nap-All® by producers of polyester resins indicates the successful performance of these products. Thus, the choice of cobalt catalyst promoter is up to the individual user.
The complete line includes Catalyst 510® as well as 12% Cobalt Ten-Cem®, 12% Cobalt Hex-Cem®, 12% Cobalt Cem-All® and 6% Cobalt Nap-All®.
CUR-Rx®
CUR-Rx® is our trade name for vanadium octoate. This metal carboxylate is used to promote the decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide. CUR-Rx® has been reported to accelerate the curing of some unsaturated polyester resins at zero degrees C or below. Therefore, the inhibitor levels must be increased if a vanadium system is used at room temperature.
For the most rapid drying rates available, we recommend CUR-Rx® in conjunction with our new Ultra-Dri® 360D Boroacylate.

Controllers

21% Cobalt Hydroxy Ten-Cem®
21% Cobalt Hydroxy Ten-Cem® is used in polyester resins as a feeder-type cobalt to resist the decline in activity ("drift") that is common upon storage of 60 days or more.
Cobalt 1021 and Cobalt 516 Feeder Paste
We recommend these two additional feeder-type catalysts for use in controlling gel-time drift.

Enhancers

Poly-Cure 503®
This proprietary blend of metal carboxylates is designed as an alternative to cobalt for use as a polyester promoter. The following benefits can be realized when substituting Poly-Cure 503® for cobalt promoters:
Potassium Hex-Cem®
Potassium Hex-Cem® serves as a synergistic promoter for cobalt, and is particularly good for light-colored polyesters. The addition of 0.01-0.5 per cwt Potassium Hex-Cem® enables the user to reduce the amount of cobalt required, thereby obtaining lighter-colored resins. Further, with Potassium Hex-Cem®, a reduction of up to 40% in gel time is sometimes realized.
8% Copper Nap-All®
8% Copper Nap-All® commonly inhibits or retards the cure of many unsaturated polyester systems. The use of copper can add shelf stability to a promoted resin, produce longer work times, promote resin synthesis and lower the peak exotherm of the formulation. On large polyester castings, surface cracks or irregularities can occur from an excessive peak exotherm. As little as 0.01% to 0.1% of the 8% Copper Nap-All® can alleviate such surface problems as brittleness and cracking.
2% Lithium Ten-Cem®
2% Lithium Ten-Cem® is used as an esterification catalyst in the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins. This product enables the manufacturer to produce resins of significantly lighter color, while allowing for better molecular weight control and improved product viscosities.
Calcium Hex-Cems and Cem-Alls
Calciums are used for color control within resins. OMG’s calcium line for UPR includes 5% Calcium Hex-Cem®, 6% Calcium Dusyn® Octoate and 10% Calcium Cem-All®.
12% Cobalt Catalyst 510® and 12% Cobalt Dusyn®
These 12% cobalt products are specifically designed for use in lighter-colored resins.
CUR-Rx
CUR-Rx® is a vanadium neodecanoate that we recommend for use in resins to impart increased green strength.
