Driers for Coatings with High Solids/Low VOCs
Environmental concerns have resulted in legislation in many countries to reduce solvent emissions from coatings. The pressure to provide coatings products that contain lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has been addressed with the formulation of high-solids resins. These resins, however, require special driers and/or drier systems to optimize the performance of the final coating. OMG has been a leader in the development of novel driers and drier systems specifically designed for high-solids coatings.
Boroacylates
Ultra-Dri® 360D is a new product based on boroacylate technology. The key benefits are excellent through and surface dry for thick films, good hardness of dry films and much greater effectiveness than conventional systems such as Co, Zr and Ca disoaps. Ultra-Dri® 360D works best in combination with 7% AOC®, Neo-Cem® and Cur-Rx® driers.
Neo-Cem® 250 Drier
We developed Neo-Cem® 250 to meet the highly demanding VOC regulations of 250 grams/liter. It eliminates the need for high loadings of zirconium and calcium. Neo-Cem® 250 also improves coating quality by significantly reducing dry time without discoloration. Because less Neo-Cem® 250 is needed, raw material costs are cut along with drying time.
Aluminum Driers
We have a line of aluminum organic compounds that function as driers for high-solids coatings. These AOC driers serve as through driers that function by cross-linking residual carboxyl and hydroxyl functionality in the resin system. Together with cobalt for good surface dry to eliminate after tack, these driers provide an effective film cure with elimination of wrinkling and improved yellowing resistance. These driers offer an alternative for VOC-compliant coatings. Please ask us about our 7% AOC and AOC 1020X products.
CUR-Rx® Drier
CUR-Rx® was specially created to rapidly cure high-solids alkyds used in trade and industrial coatings that must meet stringent VOC standards. This product has been extremely effective for curing heavy film builds. We recommend that CUR-Rx® be used in combination with DRI-Rx® for the maximum in "fast dry" benefits. Together, CUR-Rx® and DRI-Rx® eliminate wrinkling and provide the most rapid drying rates available.
DRI-Rx®
OMG's DRI-Rx® drier accelerator has proved to be a superior performer in many coatings formulations with difficult drying problems. Its excellent cost-performance features have made it more economical to use as a chelating agent to enhance drying. Because it acts synergistically with metallic driers, DRI-Rx® gives faster dry rates as well as improved through drying in heavy film builds. In addition, it provides more flexibility in formulations than metallic driers alone. DRI-Rx® can also achieve higher gloss, better aging performance and increased water resistance.
DRI Rx® HF Drier Accelerator
DRI-Rx® HF provides the assurance of stability throughout temperature extremes. Its heat resistance means added safety, so it is not "red labeled" for shipping by truck or air. Its cold weather soundness eases the worry of temperature shifts in warehouse storage. In addition, DRI-Rx® HF contains the same 30% active ingredient level as DRI-Rx® itself, so there is no need to reformulate when substituting this product.
